UK based record label, short for Barely Breaking Even.(NB: The label had an association with the German label Rapster Records. Also see BBE Records for previous parent label.)
The label was founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah and Ben Jolly in order to release both original works and compilations. Often being associated with the latter, featuring releases from prominent DJs, starting with series “Stop And Listen”, through “The Beat Generation”, into “J Jazz: Deep Modern Jazz From Japan” and beyond – featuring a huge number of collections in jazz, soul, hip-hop, r’n’b, house, drum’n’bass, et al.
Releases have featured a diverse range of artists, both on compilation duties and original releases, including Marley Marl, Pete Rock, Jay Dee, DJ Spinna, King Britt, Will I Am, Gilles Peterson, Ty, Tony Higgins, Kon & Amir, Dimitri From Paris, John Morales, Kevin Beadle, Keb Darge, Roy Ayers, amongst a great many others.
